Geotechnical Engineering

Catalog description

This course introduces students to Geotechnical Engineering through a study of: exploration and classification of soils; index properties of soils; soil compaction; effective stress; stresses in soils;shear strength; flow of water in soils; compressibility of soils; lateral earth pressures; and geosynthetics. Soil mechanics principles are applied to: foundations and bearing capacity, slope stability, embankment design and settling, and retaining walls. The laboratory component will expose the students to laboratory testing of soil properties. Prerequisite: ENVN 280 or consent of instructor. (F)
