Catalog description
This laboratory course involves measurement of stress, strain, and deflection in tension, compression, bending, and shear. The effects of stress concentrators are investigated. Tensile, compressive (buckling) and torsional failure limits are measured and compared to theory. Measurements also involve adhesives, welds, permanent and removable fasteners, joint design, fatigue, springs, columns, and beams. Students are also exposed to composites and shape memory alloys. Prerequisites: PHYS 121 or 131, MATH 156 or 166. Corequisites: GENG 254 or PHYS 254 or GENG 345 (Sp)
