Prairie Restoration and Fire Ecology

Catalog description

This class focuses on restoring, rehabilitating, and managing the prairies and oak savannas of the Midwest. The topics of site assessment and establishing goals are followed by an investigation of the tools and practices used to manipulate these sites. Procedures to evaluate and monitor restoration projects conclude the topic coverage. Due to its importance and common use, the role and ecological impacts of fire are emphasized. This course includes a significant field-based component to provide expertise in the various management techniques. Prerequisite: ESM 105 or consent of instructor (F)
