Political Economy of Discrimination (d)

Catalog description

The course satisfies elective credit for Economics majors and minors. In addition, the course satisfies the American Cultural Diversity and General Education Ethical Citizenship requirements. In meeting these requirements, the course focuses on discrimination (economic, social, and environmental) towards African Americans, Women, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Mexican Americans. Discrimination faced by these groups is examined in historical context. Economic theories of labor market discrimination and environmental externalities are then presented. Based on the historical and economic discussion, the course concludes with an examination of the important policy debates (i.e., affirmative action, school choice, immigration, and environmental justice).
