Catalog description
This course is an introduction to the study of carbon-containing compounds. Basic principles of atomic and molecular orbitals, hybridization, bonding, acid-base reactions, and mechanistic drawings are reviewed. Naming of different functional groups and their physical properties are introduced. Other topics include stereochemistry, conformations of alkanes and cyclic alkanes, nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions of alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, and epoxides, and addition reactions to alkenes. Prerequisite: A grade of a C- or better in CHEM 112. (F, Sp, Ss)
