Marching Band and Jazz Techniques

Catalog description

This course is designed to provide an overview of the practice of marching arts in the United States, including developing a marching band philosophy; dealing with issues of fund raising and budget strategies; learning musical and visual techniques; coordinating program design; and assessing drill writing software.Also, the course is designed to provide an overview of the practice of school jazz programs in the United States, including gaining familiarity with jazz pedagogy methodologies and resources; developing competence with jazz rehearsal skills for big bands and combos; learning how to teach and model the multitude of styles performed in jazz ensembles; becoming familiar with jazz literature and sources; enhancing listening/appreciation skills as related to jazz performance; developing strategies for justifying the inclusion of a jazz program in the music department; developing a pedagogical philosophy for different levels of instruction (middle school, high school, college); and designing a practical jazz curriculum.
