Hip Hop is not just a musical genre, but a cultural phenomenon with a global influence America. This class will analyze the origins of Hip Hop, its current political economy, and its global impact. Students will be able to fully understand what "culture" is and be able to interpret the key elements that defines Hip Hop culture. Students will understand the lived experience of marginalized groups through Hip Hop culture and how the culture has been used as a pedagogical tool for the subaltern, as well as a spiritual and metaphysical model.
