Cultural Competency

Catalog description

This course prepares students to become thoughtful and informed communicators across cultural, social differences, and intersectional lived experiences in varying contexts. It helps students apply an academic understanding of a range of social and cultural topics to practical problems and circumstances that they will or may encounter in their lives during and after college. The course will be held once every academic year. In addition to defining and explaining cultural competency, it will focus on a topic to align with instructors’ expertise, including popular culture and representation, healthcare and social determinants of health, environmental studies, public education, or biopower. Following a workshop format, students will learn from experts in the fields related to the topic of focus and then be expected to interact with students on creative assessment projects.
