Substance Use Disorders: Assessment and Treatment

This course provides an overview of the fundamental theories, principles, and techniques of substance use counseling and assessment. In addition to gaining theoretical knowledge of recognized substance use counseling interventions and assessments, students will practice these skills in class. Issues related to case management will be covered including treatment planning, goal setting, continual assessment, referral, record management, and written documentation. Particular attention will be paid to addressing the application of these interventions and case management procedures to culturally diverse special populations. Ethical issues related to substance use and professional responsibility will also be discussed.
