Catalog description

This course covers advanced analysis and design of steel structures with emphasis on the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method. Topics include the design of built-up members (such as plate girders), steel-concrete composite members (beams and columns), as well as advanced bolted and welded connections design. Additional failure limit states such as torsion and lateral-torsional buckling, and fire resistance of steel structures are addressed, with an introduction to performance-based approaches where appropriate. Components: Class Prereqs/Coreqs: P: CIVILENG 4230 - Steel Design or consent of the instructor. Student must be in the Structural Engineering emphasis to enroll in course or receive consent of the Program Coordinator/Instructor Typically Offered: Spring
