History of Dance

Catalog description

This course offers a historical overview of the development and evolution of dance as we know it today, including its relation to society, culture, and the future of dance. This lecture-based course allows students to dive deeper into the history of many dance forms, conduct their own historical research, and develop their own personal sense of belonging in the dance community. Significant events, cultural importance, and controversies throughout the history of dance are examined. Through readings, research, and video recordings, students are introduced to the beginnings of dance in early cultures and folk dancing to the creation of ballet, and through the evolution of modern and jazz forms.
