Catalog description

This course provides an overview of the sociological study of deviance, focusing on how societies define, label, and respond to behaviors, groups, and individuals considered deviant. Students examine various theoretical perspectives of deviance, the social construction of norms, and the social control systems established to enforce them. The course explores a variety of forms of deviance, including mental illness, substance use, sexual deviance, and suicide to analyze the development and maintenance of deviant identities and careers. Prerequisite: CRIM 115 or SOC 110 or SOC 120 or ANT 101 . Offered Alternate Years.
