Sociology of Popular Culture

Catalog description

This course examines popular culture as a socially organized field shaped by institutions, power relations, and systems of inequality. Students analyze how cultural forms are organized by social forces, how access to cultural production and participation is unevenly distributed, and how distinctions of taste and value are socially constructed. Drawing on sociological theory and research, the course explores how popular culture contributes to the reproduction and transformation of social hierarchies, identities, and everyday practices.
