This course examines how Japanese animation (anime) represents social identities and norms using an intersectional lens. The course traces the forms, history, and culture of Japanese anime and how it developed over time. This course also focuses on analyzing the role and influence of the art form in cultural, social, and global contexts. Emphasis on contemporary popular culture and how Japanese anime reproduces and resists stereotypes related to race, gender, sexuality, religion, disability, and class in global culture industries.
