Politics of Developing Areas
University of Wisconsin-La Crosse · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course focuses on the politics of countries in the "developing world" - a broad term that includes more than 100 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, South America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East and North Africa. While these countries differ from each other substantially in many ways, they all have one factor in common - they are economically, socially, and/or politically underdeveloped. This course explores what the terms development and underdevelopment mean, the causes of underdevelopment, and what can be done to address the development needs of these countries. In the process, students gain an understanding of the political, economic, and social challenges and opportunities that face the billions of people who live in the developing world. Offered Alternate Years.
