This course introduces foundational principles of voice pedagogy through scientific, artistic, and educational perspectives. Students identify and describe the structures of voice anatomy and physiology, analyze how breathing and resonance shape healthy tone, and evaluate basic acoustical concepts that influence voice production. The course examines voice development and common voice technique challenges, guiding students to apply evidence-based strategies for improving voice efficiency in applied settings. Emphasis is placed on functional methods that support expressive singing, voice health, and injury-preventive habits. Students interpret diagnostic information, formulate instructional language, and demonstrate introductory teaching techniques through peer-to-peer coaching, guided listening, and structured observation of lessons. Ethical considerations, repertoire selection, and strategies for supporting diverse learners are also addressed. By integrating theory with practical application, the course prepares emerging musicians to explain how the voice works and to support healthy singing growth in others. Voice majors planning for private studio instruction or graduate study acquire early pedagogical training, while music education majors strengthen their ability to guide developing singers in K - 12 and community ensembles. Performers benefit by refining self-awareness, increasing technical efficiency, and promoting longevity.
