Content Area Literacy for Secondary Social Studies

Literacy underpins everything we do in aiding students in the construction of an understanding of the complexity of the social studies disciplines. This course is an introduction to the teaching of literacy (reading, writing, and speaking) in content areas for 4-12 classrooms. This course focuses on the use of various content area literacy strategies in the social studies classroom to deepen students' construction of complex concepts that underpin social studies disciplines (disciplinary literacy). This includes how to improve student disciplinary literacy using pre-reading, during-reading, post-reading, vocabulary, and writing strategies. Lastly, students learn how to meet the diverse needs of learners, including EL students. Prerequisite: EDS 203 , EDS 206 ; admission to teacher education. Offered Spring.
