Catalog description

This course addresses the history of Buddhism from its beginnings in the Indian subcontinent to its spread into other regions such as Central Asia, China, Korea, Japan, various areas of Southeast Asia, and eventually to the West. Emphasis is on Buddhism in practice in a variety of social, political, economic, cultural, and linguistic contexts over a long history; this involves how Buddhism mixed with local concerns, becoming in many cases a hybrid religious form.
