This course examines the social, economic, political, and diplomatic history of contemporary United States from the 1890s to the millennium. Major topics include the development of the modern bureaucratic state; consumerism; the rise of the US as a global power; and the roles of gender, ethnicity, and race in culture, society, and politics. Special attention is given to developing skill in reading recent historical scholarship. Offered Occasionally.
