Essentials of Strength and Conditioning

Catalog description
This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the scientific and practical foundations of strength and conditioning. Emphasis is placed on the application of key principles related to anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and bioenergetics, as well as the development of practical skills in exercise technique, program design, and performance evaluation. Students learn test selection, administration, scoring, and data interpretation; warm-up and flexibility training; and exercise techniques using free weights, machines, and nontraditional methods. Additional topics include plyometric, speed, agility, and aerobic endurance training; periodization; rehabilitation and reconditioning; and facility design, layout, and policy development. The course also examines the role of nutrition, endocrine responses, and psychological factors in performance, as well as age- and sex-related considerations and the effects of ergogenic aids and performance-enhancing substances. Designed to prepare students for the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) examination, this course integrates concepts aligned with both the scientific foundations and practical/applied sections of the certification exam. Prerequisite: ESS 302 ; ESS 303 or ESS 304 ; ESS 368 . Offered Fall, Spring.
