Catalog description

The course focuses on the language and language arts/literacy development for all learners. The course provides students with the theories, principles, goals, and pedagogical skills for teaching language arts/literacy for elementary and middle level learners. The course covers key components of literacy including phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing. Emphasis is given to critical literacy including but not limited to effective practices from multicultural and multilingual literacy perspectives. Prerequisite: EDS 203 ; EDS 206 or concurrent enrollment; declared early childhood education major, elementary middle education major, or English education and TESOL major; sophomore standing. Offered Fall, Spring.
