This course bridges rigorous philosophical inquiry with community engagement, examining how philosophical thinking can illuminate contemporary social, political, and ethical issues. The course features a flexible thematic approach: each year may focus on a specific theme drawn from areas including (but not limited to) political philosophy, ethics, philosophy of law, or social justice, while some years may explore diverse philosophical questions without a unifying theme. Students participate in regular public sessions featuring expert guest speakers from academic, legal, civic, and community contexts, providing opportunities to engage diverse perspectives. Remaining sessions feature seminar discussions limited to class participants focused on philosophical texts and ideas. This design allows the course to remain relevant and responsive to current events, community interests, and pressing contemporary concerns while maintaining consistent pedagogical objectives. Spring.
