Catalog description

Borne primarily from the melding of African and European influences, jazz music and its surrounding culture exemplifies the American artistic spirit. The unique nature of jazz as a cultural touchstone of 20th century America makes it an excellent lens with which to view race relations, artistic endeavors, and the ever-changing tastes of modern society. This course seeks uncover how music created first by oppressed Black Americans has risen to the global phenomenon it is today. Spring.
