In today’s world, cities have become a major hub of human population. It is anticipated that in the near future a significant portion of world population will be living in cities. As a result of huge demands of the city dwellers, the cities of the future will need to be smart, sustainable, and resource-efficient in terms of their functionalities. Different fields of science, engineering, and technology have been instrumental in making the cities ready to provide services efficiently for the future generations by managing their natural resources efficiently and responsibly, minimizing carbon emissions, minimizing waste, reducing different forms of pollution, conserving biodiversity, and promoting renewable energy resources. This course introduces students to the smart cities and explains how natural and applied sciences, engineering, and technology solutions can contribute to the infrastructure, services, and facilities of the smart and sustainable cities. Case studies of a diverse selection of present-day smart cities will be included in this course. This course should help students to learn and understand how smart cities address environmental sustainability and their various aspects, including planning and design of smart cities of the present and the future.
