Chican*/Latin* Cultures: An Interdisciplinary Perspective

In this course, students will survey the literature and cultural production of Chicano/Latino communities in the United States, with emphasis on the transnational, diasporic, and borderlands formations of US Latino identity and culture. Considering the increasing Latino population in California specifically, and in the nation, generally, this course will address the diversity of Chicano/Latino experiences, while focusing on themes of home, family, gender, race, sexuality, exile, migration, borders, assimilation, language, and generational traumas and effects of historical US economic, political, and military intervention in Latin America. In preparation for teaching in increasingly diverse communities and providing future educators with culturally relevant resources, this course will explore the aforementioned topics by relying on contemporary works of Chicano/Latino literature and film that primarily represent Chicano and Central American communities.
