Catalog description
This is a class about the politics of diverse and culturally-relevant children's picture books. We will discuss both the writers and illustrators of children's picture books with an emphasis on how they depict authenticity and representation. Topics for this course include the following: slavery, the middle passage, race, racism, discrimination, LGBTQ, reproduction, sexuality, gender, culture, visual art, hip hop, poverty, immigration, mental illness, bullying, and stereotypes.
