Photography Past and Present: Images, Materials, and Meaning

An overview of key topics in photography, from the 19th century to present. Topics may include: the relationship of image to narrative; the changing impacts of materials & processes as photography developed as a technology; questions around visibility, social justice, and representation in relation to race, gender, sexuality, class and ethnicity in particular; photographic portraiture & identity; the ethics of photography; public & private photographic images; histories of landscape photography; and the role of photographic archives and collections to create, safekeep, and even to imagine a visual record of individuals, communities, and places of significance.
