Students gain experience reading these works and place them within material, biographical, regional, intellectual, socio-historical contexts of the 19th-century in America, paying attention to the works’ responses to religious movements, politics, gender dynamics, class, and war. Students also explore the contentious critical contexts for Dickinson’s works, the Emily Dickinson wars, the copyright battles, and major critical approaches to her works through literary history.
