This course addresses the writings of Louisa May Alcott, with attention to her novels, fairy tales, thrillers, and journals. Students will situate Alcott's works within in their historical context, exploring questions related to female authorship, sisterhood, domesticity, marriage, the Christian family, and Transcendentalism. Students will also engage with biographies of Alcott, changing critical responses to her works over time, and film adaptations of her work.
