Catalog description

We will examine key documents in the history of Western thought about literature, from Plato’s banishment of the poets to postmodernism. Other authors studied include Aristotle, Augustine, Dante, Sidney, Kant, Coleridge, Hegel, Nietzsche, Marx, Derrida, Foucault, and Lacan. This course is an introduction to the most influential theories about what literature is, how to interpret it, and how its values relate to society and the world.
