Introduction to ASL Linguistics I

Catalog description

The course brings in-depth examination of the phonological and morphological systems of American Sign Language. Students will learn and discuss methods of classifying and describing phonemes, including the Stokoe System and the Movement-Hold Model. The morphological processes including derivation, inflection, compounding, and numeral incorporation will be introduced. Students will develop phonemic awareness and apply morphological analysis to ASL discourse and literature.
