Fundamentals of Biomedical Sciences I is a four-week course that provides a fundamental understanding of the roles of cells within the body, the integration of nutrition and energy metabolism, and an introduction to lifestyle medicine, pharmacology, and epidemiology and biostatistics. Cellular biochemistry and basic anatomical structure are introduced emphasizing the roles of cells as the basic building blocks in a hierarchal system that increases in complexity as cells form tissues, organs, and organ systems. The influence of nutrition and physiological state on macronutrient metabolism are covered, with special emphasis on the integration of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in different organ systems. The consequences of the standard American diet and defects in metabolism are major clinical themes throughout the course.
