History of Social Movements

Catalog description

This course will examine social movements through contemporary and historical lenses. Students explore the notion that social movements begin with modest efforts by a loosely formed group of people to correct or introduce some social or political injustice, and the reality that some of these initial efforts have been only marginally successful while others have escalated into broader mass efforts to achieve expanded social or political goals. Students are ultimately challenged to evaluate the truthfulness of social movement statements and arguments.
