Drawing on current policy, sociocultural theory, and instructional models, students will examine the stages of language acquisition and develop differentiated approaches to planning, teaching, and assessing ELLs across the content areas. Emphasis is placed on culturally responsive teaching, integrated language and content instruction, and the use of students’ home languages as assets for learning. Through hands-on tasks and case-based practice, students will engage in developing classroom tools that promote academic language, literacy, and advocacy for multilingual learners.
