Dysphagia in Adults with Lab

Catalog description

Study of the phases of the swallow, neuroanatomy, anatomy and musculature components of the swallowing mechanism, neurologic and degenerative diseases that result in swallowing disorders and abnormal anatomical structures that can contribute to specified types of dysphagia. Topics include the medical multidisciplinary dysphagia team and the speech language pathologist's role, Screening and formal assessments of the oral, pharyngeal and esophageal stages of the swallow focusing on instrumentation procedures used to determine evidence of aspiration of food/liquid. Topics include overt and silent signs and symptoms of dysphagia, screening and Bedside Swallow evaluations, modified diets and interpreting Modified Barium Swallow Studies and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing (FEES). The lab will integrate the practical application of theoretical knowledge.
