Social and Cultural Foundations

Catalog description

This course provides an understanding of the cultural context of relationships, issues, and trends in a multicultural and diverse society related to such factors as culture, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender identities, sexual/affectional orientation, physical characteristics, education, family values, religious and spiritual values, socioeconomic status and unique characteristics of individuals, families, and ethnic groups. Students will explore their own unique cultural and ethnic worldviews to understand how these worldviews impact the counseling relationship. Students will also become knowledgeable about various minority groups in California and across the United States in terms of how the majority culture impacts the daily lives of marginalized/minority persons as well as their experience of professional counseling modalities. Course delivery methods for teaching and learning include online, blended, and face to face modalities.
