Korean Language and (POP) Culture

Catalog description

This course introduces the Korean language and culture. Language reflects people’s thoughts, behaviors, attitudes, and world views and is an important window through which one can understand the culture and society of the people who use it. Topics include the history and composition of the Korean writing system, linguistic divergences, and the use of honorifics, kinship terms, and taboo words. The discussions will focus on various linguistic phenomena found in both traditional and contemporary pop culture, such as Korean movies, dramas, advertisements, and music. The language of instruction is English. Prior knowledge of Korean is not required.
