Catalog description

Designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge needed for teaching a quality and comprehensive K-12 Health Education curriculum in public school settings. In this course, students will a) analyze the essential components of quality health education (policy and environment, curriculum, instruction, and assessment), b) examine the characteristics of effective health education curriculum and instruction, c) evaluate best pedagogical practices through observing veteran teachers, d) engage in Pennsylvania Department of Education Stage 2 Field experience in a K-12 Health Education environment, e) plan a health education unit of instruction utilizing functional information, skills-based instruction, and appropriate developmental practices and participatory methods, and f) engage with the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Model, CDC Adolescent Risk Factors, and the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBSS). Students will engage in classroom observations (Pennsylvania Department of Education [PDE] Stage 2 Field Experience) hours throughout the semester to analyze effective teaching in health education.
