Teaching Children with Autism

Catalog description
This course will address educational interventions and assessments for working with children identified within the autism spectrum disorder. The course provides students with the history and etiology of autism as well as knowledge of research-based interventions used to teach children with autism. Programmatic efforts to work on academics, behavior, social skills, and language/communication in the classroom will be addressed. Ethical issues related to intervention will be covered, as well as an overview of the research and information on causes, prevalence, and identification issues. A multidisciplinary approach to autism and Asperger’s Syndrome and education will be provided. Students are required to complete a minimum of 25 hours of fieldwork.
