Community and Public Archaeology

Catalog description

This course addresses the ethical considerations, expectations, and resources available for making the technical aspects of archaeology broadly available to various public audiences, stakeholders, and descendent communities through public outreach, community engagement, and educational programming. It addresses some of the themes and controversies that connect archaeology and archaeologists to the wider society, from the trade in illicit antiquities to educational enrichment and the use of digital media in public outreach. Students will engage with a variety of different forms of public anthropology approaches, from community-based and participatory research to educational programming and public policy initiatives.
