Federal Courts

Catalog description

Article III of the Constitution establishes the federal court system. This course examines the contours of that system from two principal perspectives: (1) the concept of federalism underlying the relationship between federal and state courts; and (2) the separation-of-powers doctrine constraining federal courts. Particular topics include congressional power to limit federal jurisdiction; the political question doctrine; and the role of international tribunals in the federal system.
