Themes include: the nature of Northern and Southern societies; the political crisis of the 1850s; the relative military strengths of each side; the major battles and campaigns; the Northern and Southern home fronts, the role African-Americans played in their own liberation; the process by which reconstruction first emerged and then collapsed.
