Catalog description
A survey of microbiology, with emphasis on basic concepts for students enrolled in healthcare programs at Washburn Tech, such as Surgical Technology or Associate of Nursing program. Topics covered in the lecture include basic structure and function of eukaryotic and prokaryotic microbes, viruses, control of microbial growth, basic epidemiology, and antibiotic and vaccine principles and uses. The lab component covers practical skills including proper lab safety, aseptic technique, pure culture work, staining techniques and light microscopy. Lectures are a hybrid of in-person and online while labs are in-person. Prerequisites: None.
