Section information text: An introductory course to help familiarize Advanced Practice Registered Nurse's (APRN) and Registered Nurses (RNs) with core concepts needed to adequately assess individuals suffering from serious illness. This course will introduce complex disease processes, introduce prognostication and treatment modalities available for various stages of illness and is also designed to introduce proper communication skills needed to adequately discuss goals of care and advance care planning options. Goals of care discussions and accepted advance care planning techniques will be introduced in this course and will allow the nursing professional to effectively participate in difficult discussions regarding serious illness while also identifying various ethical considerations. Self-care strategies and practices will also be evaluated and encouraged to support and foster clinician wellbeing.
