Section information text: Modern popular culture is a field of studies that analyzes the role of popular culture in society, how it affects social and political issues, and how those same issues influence the creation of popular culture. The communication of social issues through popular culture is called social issue messaging. As with any field of studies, or new endeavor, there are terms that may have one meaning in general discussion but have very different and specific meanings within the field. Without an understanding of these common terms and the ideas behind them, it is impossible to have a clear understanding, analysis, or communication with colleagues. In this course, students are introduced to the language and terms, along with key concepts, used to describe ideas within popular culture studies. Note: Students who have previously taken HMNT 3001 - Modern Popular Culture will not receive credit for this course.
