Catalog description

Section information text: Elementary educators have an invaluable opportunity to demonstrate the power, influence, and sheer excitement of science learning and discovery. They can inspire students’ curiosity by exploring science as a basic and fascinating human endeavor from the beginning of time. They can teach the vital skills of scientific inquiry and help students learn to communicate and defend scientific arguments that can have benefits for decision making in students’ own lives. These competencies, which promote critical and creative thinking, support not only science learning but also success in all areas of school and life. This course includes these integral components of the study of science and builds understanding of how to teach the fundamental concepts and principles of physical, life, and earth and space science using inquiry-based learning. Covering scientific tools and equipment, how science relates to other fields, and ways to ensure safety in environments that are alive with science learning, teacher candidates are involved in both science theory and evidence-based practice for implementing engaging science investigations. Integral to this course is a 25-hour fieldwork experience component where teacher candidates will observe and participate in a real-world setting under the guidance of a host teacher. Through this hands-on experience, teacher candidates have the opportunity to gain valuable insights into implementing science instruction, fostering meaningful student learning, and addressing the strengths and needs of all learners. Note: This course has a Key Assessment. The Key Assessment directions and rubric can be found in Meditrek. Teacher candidates will begin the Key Assessment in Week 5 and submit the completed Key Assessment to Meditrek in Week 6 for scoring.
