Topics in Spanish Lanuage: Heritage Speakers

Catalog description

This course is for heritage Speakers of Spanish, which means students who were raised in a home where Spanish was spoken and who are to some degree bilingual in Spanish and English. The course focuses on the common difficulties specific to heritage speakers, including, but not limited to, complex grammar structures, diverse vocabulary, varying registers, code-switching, etc. Students build on already high proficiency skills to speak and write the language in varying social contexts. By the end of the semester, students will reach the Advanced Mid proficiency level established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Heritage speaker students who complete 323 as their first college Spanish class with at least a C receive 12 retroactive credits for SPAN 101 and 102, 250 and 251. SPAN 323 substitutes for SPAN 305 and, if taken twice, for SPAN 306. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: Consent of department required.
