Teaching Reading and Other Language Arts.

Semester course; 3 lecture hours (delivered online, face-to-face or hybrid). 3 credits. Corequisites: TEDU 413 and TEDU 440 . Students will acquire an understanding of the concepts, methods and materials used to promote children’s language and literacy acquisition and development based on current theory and research with an emphasis on the interrelatedness of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Within the framework of the stages of literacy development, the course will provide a foundation in the following areas: oral language, phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and writing. Beginning teachers will be encouraged to be critically reflective practitioners as they apply reading knowledge to their unique teaching environments, curriculum and standards in order to choose the most appropriate instructional techniques for their classrooms.
