Catalog description

Semester course; 3 lecture hours (delivered online, face-to-face or hybrid). 3 credits. The course will focus on the art of teaching writing through the use of quality children’s literature. The course is designed to give students an appreciation of the value of children’s literature, examine current trends and explore the use of literature across the genres as tools for developing readers and writers. In addition, students will learn to construct a successful community of writers in Pre-K and elementary classrooms. The class will also address the assessment of Pre-K through grade three student writing and how to use that information to plan effective instruction. Students will critically examine theory, techniques and strategies in the context of how children learn to think and write.
