Treatment of SMI (Serious Mental Illness) Through a Trauma-Informed and Evidence-Based Perspective.

Semester course; 3 lecture hours (delivered online or face-to-face). 3 credits. Enrollment is restricted to students who have completed the first year of the Master of Social Work program, students in the mental health certificate, or by permission of the program director. The course builds on the introduction of clinical knowledge to provide students with an advanced understanding of how to identify, understand, treat and support individuals with SMI, including psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, major depression with psychotic symptoms, and treatment-resistant depression. The course utilizes evidence-based and advanced trauma theories to understand the mechanisms of treatment for individuals with SMI across contexts and levels of social work practice.
